Kinesio Tape® Method

Kinesio taping gives support and stability to muscle and joints and ligaments with out affecting range of motion and circulation. It is also used for preventative maintenance for swelling and pain management. Kinesio tape alleviates pain and facilitates lymphatic drainage by structurally lifting the skin. The taped portions forms convolutions in the skin, this increasing the interstitial space. The result is that the pressure and irritation are taken off the neural/sensory receptors and allowing the lymphatic system to drain more freely.

Kinesio taping is a technique based on the bodies own natural healing process. The method basically stems from the science of Kinesiology. Muscles are not only attributed to the movement of the body but also control the circulation of venous and lymph flow and body temperature.  Therefore failure of the muscle to function properly induces various symptoms. The method is applied over muscles to reduce pain and inflammation, relax over used tired muscle and to support muscle in movement on a 24 hour a day basis. It is a non-restrictive type  of tape that allows for full range of motion.

In contrast to traditional sports tapings are wrapped around a joint strictly for stabilization and support during an event, obstructing the flow of bodily fluid, which is a highly undesirable side effect.

Kinesio tape was intended to limit the bodies’ perception of weight and avoid sensory stimulation when properly applied. The Kinesio Tex tape is approximately the same thickness as the epidermis of the skin. It is made of elastic strand wrapped by 100% cotton fibers, which allow for evaporation of body moisture and allow for quick drying.  The adhesive is comprised of 100% acrylic. There is no latex in the tape making it hypoallergenic. The adhesive is heat activated and the skin must be free of oils and moisture prior to application. The tape is designed to be worn 24 hour a day for 3-5 days. The longer the tape is worn the more adherent the adhesive becomes.

Two factors determine how successful the Kinesio taping method is. One, proper evaluation of the patient’s condition to allow for proper application to the right tissue. Two, is the proper application of the Kinesio tape technique.

The Kinesio tape is used for anything from headaches, to foot problem and everything in between. Some more common uses are sprains, carpal tunnel, and bursitis of ankle, shoulder and knee.  headaches and dislocations to mention a few.

Testimonial

I would like to share a story about the miracle of Kinesio Tape®. Recently, I suffered a rib fracture from a mis-placed kick in Karate class. Although I self medicated and used a ace bandage for splinting. I still had an 8 out of 10 in the pain scale number. I had trouble sleeping, breathing and moving. A parent at class recommended Heather for Kinesio taping. I was willing to try anything. A 5 inch piece of tape was applied and in the two minute drive home, I was relieved of all my discomfort. It was hard to believe how something so small could be so effective. I encourage the use of Kinesio tape for sports and other injuries.

Truly,
JoAnn Caruso, R.N
